Intention-Setting: A Guide to Enriching Your Yoga Practice
At Vibes we believe that yoga is so much more than just a physical practice - it's a journey of the mind, body, and spirit.
Today, we're diving into the concept of 'Intention Setting' - a simple yet powerful concept to transform your yoga experience and ripple out into your everyday life!
What Is Intention-Setting?
You know that moment - when the teacher invites you to 'set an intention for your practise', and sometimes you may be thinking, '...huh?'
in simplest terms, setting an intention means deciding what you want to focus on or cultivate during your yoga practice.
It’s like setting a personal goal, but with a softer, more mindful twist. Unlike goals that are outcome-oriented, intentions are about your attitude and approach.
Why An Intention?
Setting an intention provides a sense of purpose and direction, transforming your yoga session from a series of poses into a meaningful ritual.
3 top reasons to set an intention!
Focus: An intention helps you stay present; having a clear focus prevents your mind from wandering, and allows you to get all the benefits out of your time on the mat.
Motivation: On days when getting to your mat felt like a chore, a well-set intention can reignite your passion, reminding you why you started yoga in the first place.
Connection: Intentions are amazing at deepening your connection to yourself. They encourage introspection and self-awareness, making each yoga session a step closer to your true self, keeping you connected to what makes you happy, leading to better choices in your day-to-day life.
How to Set an Intention
Setting an intention is personal and doesn’t have to be complicated.
Here’s a simple guide to get you started:
Reflect: Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself what you need today. It could be something physical, emotional, or spiritual.
Choose a Word or Phrase: Don't overthink it, go with your gut and whatever came up first. Then capture that feeling into a single word or a short phrase, e.g. 'peace', 'calm', 'strength', 'confidence', 'patience' , or 'release and let go'.
Visualise: Imagine how you'll feel when you embody your intention. Visualise yourself flowing through your practice with this intention at the forefront.
Anchor: Throughout your practice, remind yourself of your intention. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your chosen word or phrase.
Benefits of Intention-Setting
The benefits of intention-setting extend far beyond your yoga mat! Check it out:
Mindfulness: Practicing with intention cultivates mindfulness, helping you to behave in the same way in your day-to-day life, noticing you are more present and engaged.
Empowerment: Setting and achieving intentions creates a sense of self-confidence.
Emotional Wellbeing: Intentions help manage stress and emotions by providing a clear focus and positive outlook - avoid the risk of getting drawn-in to unhelpful situations, or overwhelmed when times are tough.
Next time you're on the mat, why not give it a try?
Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or new to the practice, setting an intention can enrich your experience and bring a new depth to your time on the mat.
Next time you roll out your mat, take a moment to set an intention. You might be surprised at how much it can transform your practice - and your life.
Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, or in this case, a single intention!
Namaste peeps – see you on the mat!
